No to abuse, making a stand in Ghana

Ghana have such a huge heart to help the children of their nation. Their child sponsorship programme has 4,381 children involved with another 14,869 enrolled in IN Ghana schools. They are not afraid to address societal evils and reach communities through arranging forums on child trafficking, child marriage and challenging commercial sexual exploitation of children. They love sharing the gospel and last year 23 new communities were reached with the gospel resulting in 1,451 people publically confessing Jesus.

They have a particular burden for one area of Ghana called South Tongu, where child abuse in all its forms is out of control. It is an area with extreme poverty, after the government built the Akosombo dam across the Volta River, which destroyed the inland fishing industry. Edmond Vanderpuye (IN Executive Director) and his team would like to target six of the worst affected communities and hold regular forums on child protection there until they have set up child protection committees. They have already set up 20 community committees in other parts of Ghana who act as watchdogs caring for vulnerable children. The recently released statistics relating to childcare identify this area of South Tongu as needing immediate attention.

They also intend to organise sexually transmitted infection screening for the children in these six communities, so the children can get access to treatment. It is not cheap sending in two skilled staff to get permission to hold meetings with community leaders in six communities, but we have to help them.
